Excursion White cliffs walk tour at Dover
Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
Drive up from the port past Dover Castle – an impenetrable fortress much of which is hidden deep within the chalk of the White Cliffs & beyond to the White Cliffs Visitor Centre. Here, embark on a 2 mile/3.25km walk on top of the White Cliffs, some of the most famous cliffs in the world, to your destination St. Margaret’s Bay.
Walk past a landmark of the White Cliffs, South Foreland Lighthouse, a Victorian Lighthouse built to warn mariners of the notorious & shifting Goodwin Sands & to guide them through the Strait of Dover. A place of innovation & science, the lighthouse was the first to display an electric light anywhere in the world. After your photo stop continue your walk to St. Margaret’s Bay
St Margaret’s Bay is such a charming & interesting location that Peter Ustinov, Noel Coward & Ian Fleming, amongst other notable personalities, all had houses there. It is also the point from which Channel swimmers & submarine telephone cables start & the cliff above the Bay is where the sun is supposed to reach the UK first each morning; just to the north end of the Bay is Leathercote Point which marks the western end of the line that defines the divide between the North Sea & the English Channel.
On reaching St. Margaret’s Bay enjoy some free time before re-joining your coach for the short drive back to Dover Cruise Terminal.
