Tsugaru Kanayama Pottery
Set out on a panoramic, one-hour drive through picturesque countryside to reach the city of Goshogawara, located on the Tsugaru Peninsula, approximately 25 miles west of Aomori City. Your first stop is at Tsugaru Kanayama Pottery, a renowned ceramics studio that was founded in 1985 and is part of the folk art movement. Its skilled potters produce simple yet beautiful pottery made from local clay and pine trees, with design and production influenced by ancient Japanese pottery-making methods. These internationally acclaimed ceramics are often displayed at galleries around the world.
Tsugaru Shamisen Hall with Live Musical Performance
Next, reboard your coach and proceed to Tsugaru Shamisen Hall to immerse in the world of performing arts. The facility showcases the history and artistry of the shamisen, a three-stringed instrument that originated in the Tsugaru region. The long-necked lute, which often accompanies Kabuki performances, is one of Japan’s traditional musical instruments. Here, in the comfort of the concert hall, sit back and enjoy the thrill of watching Tsugaru shamisen players — each born and raised in Tsugaru — as they bring to life the lively and robust sound of this beloved musical instrument.
With a deeper appreciation of Aomori’s cultural heritage, enjoy a comfortable drive by coach back to the pier and your awaiting ship.
