Amalfi, a rare place, where photographs simply don't do the sights justice, see them up close and personal on this walking tour through the seaside village of the Amalfi Coast. Explore the small streets and walk in the footsteps of history where the beauty of this ancient place comes alive.

Amalfi

Join your guide from the seaside promenade Via delle Repubbliche Marinare to Piazza Municipio also called "Campolillo", the ancient quarter of St. Angelo intra Moenia ( within the walls) passing through the tiny alleyways of Moorish Amalfi. Continue to the "Alley Trap" where the enemies of Amalfi were attracted and eliminated. A few paces ahead find the secondary entrance to the Cathedral of St. Andrew, which you will pass by following the narrow passage St. Andrea.

Visit this monumental complex: the Bell Tower, the Cloister of Paradise, the Basilica of Crucifix, with its frescoed chapels and the museum with sacred treasure, The Crypt, built in 1206 to hold the sacred remains of St. Andrew Apostole, the Moorish stlyle Cathedral, which features stunning 11th century bronze door from Constantinople.

Continue your stroll through the historic center of Amalfi, passing by the Santa Maria Maggiore square and the Supportico Rua to Piazza Santo Spirito where you can admire the remains of an ancient palace with medieval Venetian style balcony and the characteristic fountain "Capa e ciuccio" (Donkeys head) so-called as the mules returning from the Valley of the Ironworks were watered there. Today in the fountain has been placed a very impressive Nativity.

Paper Museum

Continue on to the Amalfi's Paper Museum, located in a 14th century medieval paper-mill and which hosts machineries and instruments used in the ancient paper-mills. The ancient technologies, restored and active, reconstruct the entire production cycle of the paper. Among the century-old tools in the museum it is possible to admire the ancient wooden mauls, operated by a hydraulic wheel; the press used to remove the water in excess from the paper; the continuous printing machine. The museum also gives you the opportunity of assisting the handmade paper production and the functioning of the ancient water-mills, moved by the waters of the Canneto torrent.

After the visit, stroll through the west side of the old town to the square where once stood the Palace of the Doges. Our walking tour concludes in Piazza Duomo, dominated by the impressive façade of the St. Andrew Cathedral.
